Adopt a Family

Zed 98.9 is proud to sponsor the Outreach Centre’s Adopt a Family program. Adopt a Family supports vulnerable families all year, and especially during the holiday season. The program focuses on single parent families who require extra help to provide for their family.

Through your donation, The Outreach Centre provides gift cards to families in central Alberta, empowering parents and caregivers to buy what they know they need for their families.

Each year, the Adopt a Family program is met with great need, and this year is not expected to be any different.

How can you help?

Make a monetary donation online (more info here).
Donate any amount by mail or phone.
Sponsor a small, medium, large or extra-large family (more info here).
Purchase gift cards for the families (they can be dropped off at The Outreach Centre).

The Outreach Centre works closely with the Christmas Bureau, Red Deer Food Bank and the Salvation Army to ensure that families in need are supported and that there is no duplication of services.

Tools for School

Join Zed 98.9 in supporting The Outreach Centre and United Way of Central Alberta‘s Tools for School! Each year, they collect school supplies for students in Kindergarten to Grade 12 whose families have limited resources. This ensures every student has the opportunity to participate in class and be successful in school.

There are a few ways you can help:

Host a Product Drive: Start a collection! Make a difference by collecting school supplies from your family, friends or workplace.
Make a Monetary Donation: Can’t make it out to shop? You can still contribute by making a secure donation online!
Shop & Drop: Double up while you’re out shopping for school supplies and drop them off at one of the community Tools for School collection bins located at:
- United Way Central Alberta: 100 – 4828 53 Street
- The Outreach Centre: 4101 54 Avenue

School might be out for the summer, but the need for school supplies doesn’t go away. For a full list of school supplies, click here.

Rolling Stones – Charlie Watts Dead at 80

The Rolling Stones drummer Charlie Watts has died at the age of 80. The rock & roll legend “passed away peacefully in a London hospital earlier [Tuesday] surrounded by his family,” according to their publicist.

The sad news comes weeks after Watts pulled out of the band’s No Filter tour.

I was born on a farm outside of the `Home of the Blue Heron’, Barrhead, Alberta…Not once did I see a Blue Heron aside from the statue on main street that regularly gets vandalized (it wasn’t me, I swear!).

I actually saw my first concert in the ol’ hometown, a double bill in Barrhead’s High School Gymnasium with Stonebolt! (Remember Them?) And headliners, Chilliwack. I’ve been hooked ever since and along with my childhood best friend, we wood-shedded in various garages with an ever rotating lineup of members in bands with names like “The Kentucky Bee Farm” and (my favorite) “Black Orchard”!

“Farming certainly wasn’t for me”, to quote my dear old dad, and shockingly, my career as a rock star stalled. But I’ve been an avid fan and music collector ever since starting with the first album I bought (or maybe pilfered) Deep Purple’s “Machinehead”! I’ve been lucky enough to have worked in this crazy business almost exclusively except for a few odd jobs including tree farming, road construction and shingling (I lasted one day!) So, here I am as I have been for the past thirty four years (give or take) on the airwaves! I’ve seen `em come and go but one thing remains forever, my love and passion for classic rock and in fact all types of music.

Some of my best memories were forged right here in these studios going back to the days when we actually spun records! I’ll always remember interviewing Rock Gods like Ozzy, Alex Van Halen, Slash and…well maybe I won’t remember them all but trust me, there have been lots!

I like to make some noise with my own band, (Yes, I’m the only original member of The Todd James Band) I’ve been an avid motorcycle enthusiast for the past thirty years and have the broken bones to prove it! My wife, Carol and I have logged well over 100,000 miles (about 161,000 KM, sorry I still think Imperial the way God intended it!)

But radio is where it’s really at for me and God (and my late father) knows it’s about all I can really do, so I guess you’re stuck with me!

Drew is an easy guy to please. He’s in his happy place when he’s got a guitar in his hands, the Blue Jays are winning, or when he’s yelling at the TV during Jeopardy. He rarely leaves home without a lint roller as he is dad/butler to a Bernese Mountain Dog named Ralph.

Led Zeppelin sings of a land of ice & snow, my story isn’t as poetic. I come from a land of lakes & locks (Kawartha Lakes & Trent-Severn Waterway locks). Heading west I tried Brandon & Calgary on for size & found Edmonton the perfect fit, just call me Goldilocks. My husband & kids would tell you I don’t need a microphone to be heard, especially when cheering at their games or for my Edmonton Elks! Thankfully, they do give me a mic & allow me to play radio on the weekends.
